Chema Madoz was born in Madrid in 1958. He was a disciple of Javier Valhonrat in the photography workshops at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. He studied History of Art at the Complutense University of Madrid, a degree that he combined with photography courses at the Centro de Enseñanza de la Imagen. In 1983 he held his first solo exhibition at the Real Sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid. In 1990 he began to develop the concept of objects, a constant theme in his photography up to the present day. Madoz’s work is close to the variant of perishable sculptures; characterised by total simplicity, always in black and white with careful lighting and exquisite simplicity in the manufacture of the objects he photographs.
He is one of the most important photographers on the Spanish art scene, whose style consists of the representation of “constructed” or feigned realities based on ephemeral stagings.
